Gravestone Art 11-19-17 3

On Sunday, November 19, at 2 pm at Connecticut Farms Presbyterian Church, 888 Stuyvesant Avenue, the Union Township Historical Society will host "Gravestone Art and Symbolism."  Lorna and Phil Wooldridge of Wise Owl Workshops will weave stories, images, and music into their talk.  The couple will discuss the interpretation of early icons from family burial plots and cemeteries and will include examples of memorialization, plus changing techniques used by carvers and today's laser etchers.

The presentation will conclude with images of Connecticut Farms Presbyterian Church Cemetery and a tour of the cemetery itself.  Attendees should wear comfortable shoes and be aware that the ground between the headstones is not level.  A brochure to accompany the presentation may be downloaded from  http://wiseowlworkshops.com/resources.html.

Refreshments will be served.  Admission is free.  For more information, please call 908-687-0048.

On Monday, November 27, at 7 pm at the Union Public Library, 1980 Morris Avenue, Tom Beisler and Tom Haggerty, trustees of the Union Township Historical Society will present "The Village of Connecticut Farms."

In the  late summer and fall of 1667, a group of families from the coast of Long Island Sound came to newly established Elizabethtown, New Jersey, and settled in an area west of town, which they named after their former home--hence the name "Connecticut Farms."  Destroyed by the British during the Battle of Connecticut Farms on June 7, 1780, the village was rebuilt.  The settlement later became the core of the Township of Union in 1808.

Come learn about the history of the Village of Connecticut Farms, the precursor of our present township.
Refreshments will be served.  Admission is free.  For more information, please call 908-687-0048.
